TIME OUT
Time out for Reynard.
He’ll just wait.
Eyeing up those chickens
To seal their fate.
Time out, but wary,
On the qui vive.
Fodder for his family
Just about to thieve.
Time out for him now,
Night’s work done.
Taking a siesta
In the sun.
Say what you will, but
The urban fox,
Is part of Nature’s spectrum,
Not unorthodox.

Photographs taken in a Surrey garden … WHB: 2015-17
Love the words and the pictures! Magical! We have a fox family close by. I’ve had a young one on my deck. I love them!

I know people say they’re pests but you have to admire them! We’re these in your garden?

The fox taking time out on top of the chicken run was in my daughter’s nearby garden, the rest in my own. Thanks for commenting, Maggie.

Wonderful to have these in your garden Roland. Used to see lots of foxes when living in London. Since moving to the country I’ve seen hardly any.

Thanks for commenting, Davy. Whereabouts in London were you living?

Forest Hill, Camberwell, Chelsea, Ruislip Manor. They used to move us around a bit in the Met. We had fox families at Camberwell and Ruislip Manor.

I lived in Uxbridge, Sussex Square, Gloucester Road, Kings Road Chelsea, then Putney. Don’t remember seeing foxes there at all, but that was a long time ago.

In Ruislip Manor we had a den with mother and cubs under my daughter’s Wendy House.

They love excavating beneath garden sheds. Wendy Houses must seem ideal to them too.

It was an experience watching her play with the cubs at night. Used to be woken by the vixen’s scream that sounded like someone being murdered.

Yes, it’s a most disturbing noise. Perhaps you know it more than most!?
