(Poem No.51 of my favourite short poems)
A Poetic Formula
A dozen, a gross and a score
Plus 3 times the square root of 4
Divided by 7
Plus 5 times 11
Is 9 squared
And not a bit more.
This ingeniously composed equation and the accompanying verse is quoted in Gyles Brandreth’s 2015 book ‘Word Play’ (Coronet Books – Hodder and Stoughton), as a composition by the playwright, Tom Stoppard.
This is great. With a mathematical formula he has managed a fun and rhyming poem.
Never seen this before.
And number 9 has a unique position in numerology.
Thanks for the share

Glad you found it fascinating, Miriam, as I did also.

All them numbers Roland, they make me feel queasy. Nice poem, although my head started hurting after the second line.

A hurting head is an occupational hazard with a lot of poetry, Davy.

Agreed Roland, but poetry with Maths in. This boy’s worst nightmare.

Try thinking of it as Maths with Poetry in, Davy!

You should have been my teacher Roland.

I’d have thought you’d be good at maths, Davy. I was always led to believe that I could count on a policeman.

15 Love Roland. I can’t argue with that.
