THE SELFIE
Self-conscious
images
abound.
We meet them
everywhere
around.
They’re soon
discarded
and replaced
by the next
one from
the database.
Narcissus
being ever
eager,
keen for
yet another
teaser.
Crying for
your strict
attention,
I’m all yours,
full of
invention.
An endless stream
of captured
moments
containing
crazed and daft
components.
Followed up
in quick
succession
by yet
another
indiscretion.
Let’s celebrate,
our life
is dull.
We need to
record it all
– in full
True that! The ending is so beautiful, indeed we need to record it in full and not just fraction.
Good day, Charu ☺️

Excellent Roland, and I love the painting / drawing. Is it one of yours? Yes, the selfie. Your poem brings out all the thoughts and challenges it presents for those of us from certain eras. I’m off into London today and will no doubt have to fight the tidal wave of selfie sticks flowing down Oxford Street.

Thanks, Davy. Yes, one of my dashed-off selfies! Lethal weapons those sticks.

Priceless in many ways, Roland. Live in the moment no matter when it was or is.

Thanks for your message Eugenia. It interrupted me taking my latest selfie!?

I find your poem both a fun, serious and sad reflection of the Selfie craze. Didn’t even know about selfie sticks.
I have noticed groups of 15/16 year old take photos of themselves with deliberate unflattering poses and facial expressions. they seem to have a lot of laughs looking at these.
I can’t say I have any desire to take one; maybe the Narcissus streak is missing.;)

I do agree with you, Miriam. A largely pointless activity, just to waste more time exchanging self portraits on social media…. & the sticks are most definitely an extension too far.

Roland, I love your poem. But it makes me wonder though…when I post, is that not just another selfie… only with words instead of pictures.

Not at all, Jerry. Not As long as it’s a genuinely felt comment. I think it’s when we click ‘Like’ without really meaning it, that we are being too self-conscious. Thanks for your thoughtful comment though.
