Books Do Not Die . . .

Books-DoNotDie

Books, do not die

{ A paean to Books }

Books, do not die,
You bring me such joy;
I’ve dwelt in your pages
Since I was a boy.

Books, do not die,
You are humble yet proud,
Bringing solace and hope,
The sun through the cloud.

Books, do not die.
Your warmth and your grace,
Your wisdom and charm,
I clutch and embrace.

Books, do not die,
You have smell, you have taste.
Your very presence
Will not go to waste.

Books, do not die,
Your existence delights
You see me through
Those long dark winter nights

Books do not die,
My dreams you renew;
You offer escape,
I can’t live without you.

Books, Do not die;
Do not burn, Or expire.
Life blood of words,
Procreate and inspire.

    • Thank you, Nigel. We were promised a paper-less world. Then one without the printed book. Let’s hope neither happen. I do hear that Amazon has opened a bookshop for the paper-printed word. So perhaps the seeds of hope are there.

  1. Absolutely wonderful Roland! I couldn’t agree more and should maybe print your poem and
    show to next grumbling removal company.:))
    Talked to someone yesterday and voiced my pondering where to put the books when I move.
    Haven’t you read them? came the question. Yes…..and most are my friends. Some worn from use.
    Now, honoured booklover, could you advise me.

    Thanks for this poem Roland

    • I feel as you. Once read, I feel a book is part of me, of my history and my life experience. It hurts me when I decide to prune my collection, as I have to do from time to time. Thanks for commenting, Miriam.

  2. I feel the same way, Roland!

    You expressed this with such heart-feeling and love…to books! YAY, books! 🙂

    They have kept me company my whole life. They have been a way to escape. A way to learn. Relax. Grow. Be challenged. And so much more! 🙂

    I worry that a day will come (after I’m dead and gone I hope) when book-books will no longer exist. 😦 I wrote a story about that and posted it on my blog a few years ago.

    I love the smell, look, and feel of books…I rub my fingers across the cover and I enjoy turning each page as I read! 🙂

    HUGS!!! 🙂

  3. Put in the eloquent way only a book lover and poet could Roland. There was an article in the Guardian last year showing figures for 2017 that sales of electronic books was falling while the sale of traditional books was on the rise. The driving force behind the change was young people who were preferring to read the traditional book. There seems to be hope.

    • Thank you, Cate. Did you notice my Carol Ann Duffy ‘The World’s Wife’ among the titles in my photographs? If you don’t know it, I think you would love it.

  4. Wonderful poem! I loved looking at the spines in your photo. There’s nothing like the look, feel, and smell of a physical book. Not long ago I started taking my 2 year old granddaughter to the library for story time. She loves looking for books and checking them out to take home. I want to foster the love of reading and hope it lasts.
